Kandu represents a 40-year dream of global exploration planning and execution come true. She brought us home safely, without major incident. ” – Eric Rigney

A proven 42-ft. sailboat, successfully completed a 4 1/2 year journey sailing around the world with a family of four aboard, demonstrating its capability for extensive voyages. Having already navigated the globe, Kandu is poised and ready to be the foundation for your own new adventures.

By sail or auxiliary, Kandu can be trimmed and helmed by one person without leaving the safety of the cockpit. Self-steer via windvane or autohelm. Behind-the-mast mainsail furling easily exposes the rig to any repairs and allows the hoisting of a storm trysail. The genoa furls.

Not all Tayana’s are equipped for comfortable global independence. Kandu generates its own power from solar, wind, and/or engine, and makes water from a 30 gallon per hour AC-powered desalinator. All lights are LED with interior lights available night-vision red. Deck prisms bring added light to the interior. The galley sports a gimbaled 3-burner stove/oven, a small microwave, separate top-opening freezer and side-opening fridge, and a 10-gallon hot water tank. For the engine, diesel fuel passes through three filters ahead of the engine’s built-in filter. Her hard dodger is custom-built for safety and comfort, solid enough to support the weight of a crew member or a crashing wave. Safety systems abound.

“Failure is not an option when your young family is on board. Kandu kept us safe.”

Peruse the list carefully. Few vessels carry the safety features and comfort amenities as Kandu. Leslie likes a bright, fresh, comfortable environment. Eric likes self-contained reliance, safety, and redundancies. Kandu is all this and more. She’s solid, quiet, and is as comfortable in a fresh breeze as she is at anchor. She’s a no-nonsense bluewater cruiser.

The owners upgraded and added many features in preparation for global adventure. Her previous owners, a retired couple, sailed her from California to Australia and back, exploring island groups along the way for several years. They extended the fixed stainless aft pulpit to reach around the cockpit and support solar panels, and added a stainless mast to support a wind generator. Returning to North America, they kept her in Mexico’s Sea of Cortez, exploring that part of the world for several more years. The original owner before them went to the factory in Taiwan to supervise her construction, adding amenities such as deck prisms and opening port lights. He beefed her up with gear such as heavy duty chain plates, behind the mast furling, and mast steps. He then sailed her from California to Hawaii and French Polynesia several times before letting her enjoy bigger adventures. Whatever your cruising dreams, Kandu can get you there . . . and back.
